Former Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Mont.) is recuperating in a Washington, D.C., intensive care unit after suffering a stroke late Wednesday night, according to the Associated Press.

Burns' son, Garrett, reportedly informed Rep. Danny Rehberg (R-Mont.) that his mother discovered the former lawmaker acting disoriented at approximately 9 p.m. at their home in Arlington, Va.

Doctors at the Virginia Hospital Center, where Burns was first admitted, diagnosed him as having suffered an abnormal heartbeat and a stroke. He was later transferred to an undisclosed hospital in Washington.

Burns, 74, lost re-election to the Senate in 2006 after serving nearly eight years. He was replaced by Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), who beat him in a tight race.
