Pelosi gets call from Weiner at White House picnic

The annual White House picnic for lawmakers is supposed to be a casual, light-hearted affair to give members a break from politics.

That wasn't quite the case Wednesday night.

It was there, in the backyard of the White House, that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) received a call from Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) informing her he would resign, according to ABC News.

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) also got a call from Weiner while he was at the picnic, the report said.

Meanwhile, Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) used the time to catch up with White House spokesman Jay Carney and enjoy a cigarette on the White House lawn, according to CBS News' Mark Knoller, who tweeted a picture of Boehner smoking.

President Obama welcomed the lawmakers, saying this event was for them and their families, noting "we understand that public service is tough on the families; in some ways, tougher.  You've got spouses who are away from home, moms or dads or grandpas or grandmas who don’t get a chance to see you as often as they’d like."

He added: "I want you guys to eat until you can’t eat any more." But then he referenced first lady Michelle Obama's anti-obesity campaign, saying "And then tomorrow you can 'Let’s Move.'"

Hotdogs, hamburgers and fried chicken were on the menu -- giving lawmakers plenty of opportunities to take the president up on his offer. There were also three-legged races and a pie-throwing contest (no word on who won).

Several lawmakers tweeted about the event.

Freshman Republican Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) tweeted a pic of himself and his family in front of the White House portico (seen to the right), writing "Thank you to @BarackObama for having members of Congress over for WH picnic."

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) also tweeted a pic of her and her family.
