Senate celebrates Seersucker Thursday

It's Seersucker Thursday in the Senate.

Several senators participated in the annual event, which has them exchanging their heavy-weight suits for the lighter-weight, pale-blue-and-white-stripped fabric that is much more suitable for Washington's humidity.

It's a tradition then-Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) revived in 1996 and takes place on a Thursday in June.

This afternoon a group of participating senators gathered off the Senate floor for the traditional group photo.

It was a bipartisan group who dressed for the day: Sens. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Kay Hagan (D-N.C.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), and Roger Wicker (R-Miss.).

Collins accessorized her suit with a pearl necklace, while Lee sported a deep-red tie and Murkowski paired her suit with bright-blue flats.

Lott may no longer be a member of the upper chamber but he was spotted roaming the Capitol halls in a seersucker suit and pale-purple tie.
