White House gets their Bible wrong

The White House fact-checked an error of Biblical proportions on Wednesday.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, in his briefing earlier the day, quoted a widely-known motto but made a mistake by mis-attributing it to the Bible.

"Well, I believe the phrase from the Bible is, 'The Lord helps those who help themselves,'" he said.

But the White House transcript noted the error with an asterisk and the text: "This common phrase does not appear in the Bible."

President Obama
on Wednesday criticized Congress for holding a vote confirming the national motto is "In God We Trust."

"I trust in God, but God wants to see us help ourselves by putting people to work," Obama said.

Carney clarified that Obama's point was "we have it within our capacity to do the things to help the American people."

No one doubts that "In God We Trust" is the U.S. national motto, Carney added.
