RNC staffers beat DNC at softball 15-3

There was a fierce competition between Republicans and Democrats on Monday night, but it wasn't political fireballs that were being thrown. It was softballs.

It was the annual softball game between staffers at the Democratic National Committee and those at the Republican National Committee, and this year, the GOP took the cake, 15-3.

The two teams played seven innings amid chants from the stands of "Fire Nancy!" from the GOP fans, and "Oh Oh Oh Obama" from the Democrats. RNC Chairman Michael Steele was in the stands the entire game; his counterpart at the DNC, Tim Kaine, was out of town and couldn't make it.

Strategically, the game came down to a handful of strong hits by GOP team members, exacerbated by poor fielding from the Dems. Republicans took the lead early on and never let go.

After the match, ITK asked DNC spokesman Hari Sevugan what Democrats might be looking to do better next year. "We understand that next year these guys will be coming off a tough November election loss," Sevugan joked, "So we'll be looking to be sympathetic, and nice."

But RNC spokesman Doug Heye had a comeback for Sevugan's remarks, even as the two headed off together to an after-party at Kitchen: "Hari has a cannon in one arm," Heye said, "but as per our bet, he'll be wearing whatever shirt I design for him during his next TV appearance."

Look for Sevugan, or DNC communications director Brad Woodhouse to be sporting an RNC designed shirt at a public appearance in the near future.
