Fran Drescher stops by Capitol Hill

Fran Drescher, the actress best known for playing "The Nanny" on TV, was on Capitol Hill Wednesday and Thursday lobbying for safer cosmetics.

Drescher met with Reps. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.), and Steve Israel (D-N.Y.).

She also sat down with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebellius and Undersecretary of State Melanne Verveer.

Drescher has been an outspoken advocate for eliminating cancer-causing carcinogens from consumer cosmetic products, something she knows about firsthand: the smoky-voiced actress founded an all-natural cosmetics company, Fran Brand, last year.

"Can you believe there are carcinogens in baby shampoo?" Drescher asked ITK as she walked across the Capitol Rutunda on her way to meetings with lawmakers. "It's just amazing, and I'm so glad finally we have legislation to address it."

The legislation in question is the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 introduced this week by Markey, Schakowsky, and Baldwin.

In a statement about the bill, Markey said, "This important bill closes a gaping hole in our Federal Laws that allows potentially dangerous chemicals to remain in the cosmetic products we use every day.”
