Americans divided over 'Snooki tax'

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and "Jersey Shore" star Snooki are both staunchly opposed to a 10% tax on tanning beds. But the rest of America isn't so sure.

A 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll released Monday found that Americans are almost evenly split when it comes to the tanning tax, with opposition to the levy holding a five-point lead. Forty-six percent of adults polled reported being opposed to the surcharge, while 41 percent support a so-called “sin tax” on the potentially cancer-causing rays.

Thus far, the threat of cancer has failed to deter Snooki from regular trips to the sun lamp, but the tax finally might do it. Snooki claimed in a recent episode that she doesn't go tanning anymore, "Because Obama put a 10 percent tax on tanning."

A vocal McCain supporter, Snooki took the opportunity to praise the Arizona senator, observing that, "McCain would never put a 10 percent tax on tanning. Because he’s pale and would probably want to be tan."

The tax was included as part of the healthcare bill that was signed into law earlier this year.
