Clemens pleads not guilty to charges of lying to Congress

Former pitching great Roger Clemens pleaded not guilty to charges of lying to Congress about whether he used performance-enhancing drugs, according to media reports Monday.

Clemens — a seven-time Cy Young Award winner as the best pitcher in baseball — was arraigned in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., on six felony charges of lying to lawmakers at a 2008 House hearing on performance-enhancing drug use in baseball.

The 24-season veteran has maintained he is innocent of the charges and said he will fight them in court.

A trial is scheduled for April 5, 2011. It is likely to shed light on Congress's involvement in investigating performance-enhancing drugs in baseball and Major League Baseball's response to it.

Clemens's legacy and reputation could be on the line no matter the outcome. But if he is convicted on all counts, he could face up to 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine.
