George Clooney to visit Capitol Hill Tuesday

Actor and activist George Clooney plans to visit Capitol Hill Tuesday afternoon, an unlikely celebrity appearance during the middle of a month-long congressional recess. 

Luckily for him, Clooney only has one scheduled meeting, with Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.), the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The topic for discussion? Clooney's recent trip to Sudan, where he spent a week traveling through the southern portion of the country with NBC's Ann Curry.

The actor is a longtime activist on behalf of refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan, where approximately three million people have been displaced by war, famine, and genocide.

Clooney has found in Lugar an unlikely ally in the actor's efforts to draw attention to the plight of Darfur's refugees.

The movie star has donated thousands of dollars to Democrats in the past five years, but he and Lugar share a mutual interest in the political and military situation in Darfur.

In May of this year, Lugar led the latest in a series of hearings by the Foreign Relations Committee on the issue.
