Academy Award-winning actress Geena Davis will visit Capitol Hill Thursday today to discuss global women’s rights with Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.).

The pair will discuss the possibility of ratifying a treaty titled the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW – pronounced see-daw).

According to a press release, CEDAW "is the only treaty to focus on the rights of women." Ratified by 186 of 193 countries so far,  the treaty "protects fundamental human rights, addressing violence against women, the right to vote, sex trafficking, and access to education, among other issues."

The Senate requires a 67-vote majority in order to ratify international treaties.

Davis is best known for starring in films such as "Thelma and Louise," "A League of their Own," and "Beetlejuice." Politiical observers will also recall her role as President Mackenzie Allen in the 2005-2006 ABC series "Commander in Chief."

In 1999 Davis nearly qualified for the U.S. Olympic women's archery team.
