Robert De Niro on President Obama: 'He'll do better in the next four years'

05/04/12 | 10:24 am by Judy Kurtz

altRobert De Niro is upset by what he calls the “shenanigans” and “divisiveness” going on in Washington.

In an interview with “Meet the Press” host David Gregory, the Academy Award-winning actor, a Democrat, offered some advice to lawmakers: “Don’t make the preposterous statements, don't get into all this posturing and silliness… Try to move forward and help the president, even though you're from another party, the other party. Try to stop criticizing so much. Try to move it forward.”

“The Godfather Part II” star, who supported then-Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) in 2008, refrained from criticizing the work the president’s done in his four years in office when Gregory asked whether he’s “as inspired” and “as hopeful” as four years ago.

“You know, it's very easy to criticize people. I think he's done a good job. He's done other things that maybe he should have been a little stronger about, people will complain. But it's not easy to be President of the United States,” De Niro said in the interview on NBC’s “Press Pass” web series.

The veteran entertainer added about Obama, “I know he’ll do better in the next four years, when he won’t have to worry whether he’s going to be elected or not.”

Rep. Cummings: I live on the 'Do the Right Thing' block

05/02/12 | 2:26 pm by Judy Kurtz and Mike Lillis

altaltRep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) is comparing his living situation to a scene out of a Spike Lee flick.

The congressman, speaking Wednesday morning at Howard University about housing policy and how black communities are faring in the foreclosure crisis, had much to say about his digs in Baltimore: “I live in the inner-, inner-, inner-city. I'm one of the few congresspeople who live in the inner, inner city," he said.

"You know, I ain't living close to the inner city, I'm right there on the 'Do the Right Thing' block," Cummings continued, citing the 1989 movie.

It’s not the first Hollywood reference the lawmaker has made about his abode’s urban location. Cummings has said before that he lives in the same Charm City neighborhood where HBO’s gritty crime drama, “The Wire,” was filmed.

He added at Wednesday’s event, sponsored by the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, "I'm on the block where they knock on your door at two o'clock in the morning [and say], 'Mr. Cummings, you got a dollar, man?'"

Meghan McCain eyes her fave TV zombie, chickens out

05/02/12 | 1:32 pm by Judy Kurtz

altForget George Clooney or Chace CrawfordMeghan McCain only had eyes for one supernatural guy during Correspondents’ dinner weekend … a zombie.

The outspoken Daily Beast and MSNBC contributor and daughter of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) told ITK during MSNBC’s after-party on Saturday that she was on the lookout for Jon Bernthal, who plays a character named Shane in one of her fave TV shows, “The Walking Dead.”

McCain, 27, has often shared her family’s love for AMC’s popular zombie-filled series. She posted a message on Twitter last year, writing, “Dad picked me up from the train station and now we’re watching ‘The Walking Dead.’ ”

Asked at the time about the reason he thinks his daughter enjoys the show about zombies so much, McCain, 75, replied, “Because she thinks her father is one! That’s where it springs from.”

McCain says she finally got her chance to meet the spooky show’s star over the weekend when she eyed him at an event. But alas, McCain must’ve been in a zombielike trance when she finally spotted Bernthal, because she couldn’t muster up the courage to say hello to the actor, whom she described as “so hot.”

“I geeked out!” McCain sheepishly exclaimed with a laugh.
