‘The Office’ star wants Sen. Boxer as a TV boss

05/16/12 | 1:36 pm by Megan McCourt

Chef Barton Seaver, Oceana campaign director Beth Lowell, Angela Kinsey, and fisherman Donald WatersOn her first trip to Capitol Hill this week, Angela Kinsey — who plays the feisty Angela Martin on NBC’s “The Office” — was a little nervous.

Despite memorizing lines for a living, Kinsey said she didn’t want to mess up the facts at a Capitol briefing with ocean conservation group Oceana where she was speaking out against seafood fraud.

“I didn’t want to be the one who was putting out false information,” she said. “If I say something that’s totally off, maybe [TMZ.com] will run it and a few people will laugh, but when you’re a politician you have that responsibility.”

Kinsey spent Monday and Tuesday making the rounds on Capitol Hill, speaking to politicians such as Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) and House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.). But she made sure to do her homework beforehand.

“Don’t think I won’t be Googling [them],” she said. “My iPad will be out.”

The petite blonde actress admitted she has “a little bit of a crush” on Sen. Barbara Boxer, who she planned to meet with this week. She also declared the California Democrat to be the best lawmaker to run Dunder Mifflin, the fictional workplace in “The Office” in which Kinsey plays the head of accounting.

“Lady power!” Kinsey said. “I’d like to see a chick run ‘The Office.’ That would be good.”

Congressman trains for first marathon

05/16/12 | 10:36 am by Judy Kurtz

altRep. Tim Ryan is hurting.

The Ohio Democrat is busy training for his first marathon, and while he says he’s enjoyed it, his body doesn’t sound too happy about it: “The sore back, and the sore knees and the sore ankles to prove it!”

But the months-long training and conditioning for this weekend’s 26.2-mile Cleveland Marathon is all being done for a good cause. The congressman is raising awareness and money for Project Welcome Home Troops, which teaches stress-relief techniques to returning military veterans.

Ryan, 38, told ITK in a phone interview, “I thought, ‘Well, if I’m going to do it,’ you know, ‘one of the issues I’ve really been working on is the vets coming home who are having all these issues with what they’ve seen and dealt with.’ ”

Besides wearing out his sneakers, Ryan says his training regimen also includes some sweat-inducing hot-yoga sessions, which help him with back pain and a bad knee that he hurt playing college football.

Ryan, who ran a half-marathon a few months ago, says he’s gained a lot of muscle and lost about 10 pounds. But it’s been a bit of a struggle fitting in runs while juggling his congressional duties: “It’s tough with the schedule just because the long runs, if you’re running 12 miles, you know that’s a two- or three-hour commitment there.”

He has yet to tell any of his colleagues in Congress about his marathon attempt, admitting, “I didn’t want to tell anybody until I was sure I was going to be able to make it.”

Now that he’s run 18 miles in his training, he’s confident he’ll be able to cross the finish line come Sunday. The early forecast is for a warm day, with a high temperature expected to surpass 80 degrees.

Ryan already has a plan in mind for once he reaches the end of the race, saying with a laugh, “I’ll probably drink a protein drink and then a beer. Maybe not in that order.”

Mystery in aisle 3! Rubio’s official stationery winds up in discount store

05/15/12 | 3:21 pm by Judy Kurtz

altA head-scratching stumper is developing over a how a Florida senator’s stationery ended up in a Missouri discount store.

Lawyer Dale Ingram was bargain-hunting for office supplies this month at a Kansas City shop called Cargo Largo when he made the unusual find: a pack of 500 business-letter envelopes stamped with Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-Fla.) return address.

Aside from the lawmaker’s name, the envelopes were marked “Official Business,” according to The Kansas City Star, which first reported the mail mystery.

Ingram says the mailers, which he’d bought for under five bucks, weren’t emblazoned with the possible vice presidential candidate’s signature. But he questioned his purchase, telling the newspaper, “I thought, ‘How’s this being sold here?’ The taxpayers have probably paid for this once.”

The envelopes reportedly could have been mailed without using postage under the franking privilege.

Ingram admits he considered the possibilities in using the wandering writing materials to stir up some potential trouble for Rubio: “In my evil mind — not being part of that party — I was thinking I could probably send these out and create some mischief. And if not me, somebody else.”

But wiser heads apparently prevailed. Ingram says, “I wouldn’t want anyone to do something, even of Rubio’s party, and then blame it on the other party. Best to take them out of commerce.”

Rubio’s office told the Star that the envelopes were part of a shipment to the senator’s Tallahassee workplace.

In an emailed statement to the newspaper, spokesman Alex Conant wrote, “While other envelopes from that shipment are accounted for, we are working to determine how some were apparently separated. … While it’s not unheard of for things to get lost in transit, it’s something we take seriously.”

Chief of Protocol
 dishes out advice
on traveling in style

05/15/12 | 2:03 pm by Judy Kurtz

altAmbassador Capricia Marshall is offering up some advice on how to stay fresh-faced and looking good while jetting around the world.

The affable Chief of Protocol — known for her serious sense of style —was one of several honorees at last week’s Running Start Women to Watch Awards at the National Press Club. The nonpartisan, nonprofit organization works to educate young women about politics and inspire them to run for elected office.

Before bestowing the “Trailblazer Award” on Marshall, former White House press secretary Dee Dee
Myers joked of her designer label-wearing friend, “Ask anyone who knows her and I really believe the first word to describe her is ‘generous.’ She would give you, really give you, the shirt off her back, even if you have no use for that size 2 Oscar de la Renta.”

But the high-flying fashionista, who just returned from a trip to China with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, discloses that there are a few secrets to keeping up her reputation for a glowing appearance while on the road — and none of them have to do with the clothes in her closet.

Right off the bat, Marshall says water is her BFF in the air: “Lots of water. Water, water, water. People say that, but it’s true. You really got to drink a lot of water for your skin to stay nourished and not to get all sort of dry and crackly.”

While she’s been known to sport Manolo Blahniks in public (which led to an embarrassing tumble captured on YouTube at a 2010 White House statealt dinner), Marshall admits her footwear in the skies is far less formal.

“This is going to be silly, but I’m going to say it. I wear compression socks because when you get off the plane, you know how your feet are swollen and your legs get swollen? Never with compression socks. It helps with circulation,” she says.

Marshall also recommends refraining from overindulging and maintaining a balanced diet.

But her final suggestion might throw weary world travelers for a loop: “Big, big, big tip: The second I land, if I can … I work out immediately. It really helps with jet lag.”

Although sweating up a storm in a faraway land after an endless flight might not appeal to everyone, Marshall claims hitting the gym is the way to go: “As soon as I land, I put on my workout clothes, and I go at it.”
