The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater held its annual gala this week at the Kennedy Center. The gala celebrated Robert Battle's Inaugural Season as Artistic Director.

Many members of Congress came out to support the event, including Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-Tex.), Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.), Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and Rep. Melvin Watt (D-N.C.).

BET's Debra Lee also came out to the Kennedy Center to enjoy a performance by the dance group as well.

Proceeds from the gala will support Ailey's Washington, D.C. outreach programs as well as provide scholarships to talented young dance students from the D.C. area who wouldn't normally be able to afford tuition at the Ailey School in New York.
