Last night at The Kennedy Center, the hall reverberated with the refrain, I AM WOMAN HEAR ME ROAR, when Vital Voices presented its global leadership awards to an outstanding group of women who on a daily basis bear out their organizational belief that “investing in women improves the world”.

Melinda Gates along with Afnan Al Zayani, Panmela Castro, Andeisha Farid, Rebecca Lolosoli, and Roshaneh Zafar were honored for their leadership and dedication to public good, human rights and entrepreneurial and economic empowerment in the United States, Bahrain, Brazil, Afghanistan, Kenya, and Pakistan.

In attendance to cheer them on were many inspiring and dedicated women in their own right including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Tory Burch, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas), Andrea Jung, Diane von Furstenberg, Sally Field, Bobbie Greene McCarthy, Reese Witherspoon, Ann Moore, and Sheila Johnson. Representing their gender were Brian Williams and Nicholas Kristof who noted that gender equality is the central moral struggle of our time.  With the help of Vital Voices and amazingly strong women around the world, that goal felt within reach.
