The 26th Annual Helen Hayes Awards for outstanding Washington theater, the District's own version of the Tony's, were presented on Monday night at a black-tie awards show at the Warner Theatre. After a reception for presenters and theatre patrons, awards were given out in 26 categories. "Ragtime," which was produced by the Kennedy Center, received four of the top awards, including Best Director of a Musical for Marcia Dodge, Best Resident Musical, and Best Lead Actress in a Musical for Christiane Noll.
Also shown at the Kennedy Center, "A Streetcar Named Desire" netted three awards, as well as a VIP audience during its three-week run, including White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.). Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett won the award for Outstanding Actress in a Non-Resident Production for her portrayal of the troubled Blanche DuBois. Robin McLeavy, who played her sister, Stella, won the award for Outstanding Supporting Performer.
Presenters included actors Brigid Cleary, Natascia Diaz, Jessica Frances Dukes, Paige Hernandez, Brian Hemmingsen, Nanna Ingvarsson, J. Fred Shiffman, Gary Sloan, and Craig Wallace. James MacArthur, the son of Helen Hayes and playwright Charles MacArthur, also presented a special award.Tony Award winning playwright Terrence McNally was also on hand as a special presenter, as was playwright Edward Albee.
The awards are named after legendary actress and Washingtonian Helen Hayes, also known as the First Lady of American Theater, who is one of only twelve people who have ever won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award.
