40th Anniversary of Earth Day

E-mail

The Earth Day Network sponsored a 40th Anniversary of Earth Day program Thursday afternoon on the national mall.

Members of Congress, including Sens. Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Dave White, chief of the Natural Resource Conservation Service for the USDA and actress Kristin Bauer of HBO’s True Blood all came out to support various Earth Day-related causes.

Carper spoke on clean energy and encouraged children listening to recycle. Bauer came out to support the International Fund for Animal Welfare, an organization she’s been working with for over a year. Bauer works to save whales, and against ivory trade.

“Over 400,000 whales have been killed and only 300 are left,” Bauer said.

Earth Day began in 1970 as a way to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment.
