The Butterfly Gala Seventh Annual Awards Dinner were held on Wednesday night at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. Government officials, business leaders, renowned researchers, and individuals with lupus came together to celebrate and honor leaders for their efforts to advance lupus as a significant public health problem.

This year's honorees are Ted Turner, Chairman, Turner Enterprises, Inc.; Sen. Daniel K. Inouye (D-Hawaii); Human Genome Sciences (HGS) and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Accepting the awards on behalf of the companies are H. Thomas Watkins, President and Chief Executive Officer, HGS, and Deirdre Connelly, President, North American Pharmaceuticals, GSK.

CNN Anchor and Special Correspondent Soledad O'Brien served as the Master of Ceremonies. The gala featured a special performance of the song "Lucy" by singers/songwriters Julian Lennon and James Scott Cook. Last year, Lennon and Cook released the song "Lucy" to honor Lucy Vodden, a childhood friend of Lennon's, who recently passed away after a long battle with lupus, and Cook's grandmother, Lucy Cook, who has been living with lupus for years. Vodden was the subject of a drawing that Julian created which inspired his father to write the classic Beatles song, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
