The D.C. Jazz Festival Gala Concert

E-mail

The D.C. Jazz Festival kicked off Wednesday night with a gala concert at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

Originally known as the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival, the newly-incarnated D.C. Jazz Festival runs through June 13, and the opening party drew a high-caliber group of jazz supporters, producers, and musicians.

For a taste of the scene, just imagine British Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald rubbing elbows with former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry, which they did.

After a cocktail hour, there was an hour-long show featuring the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars complemented by the sounds of the teenaged sensation Tony Madruga on the piano and Roberta Gambarini singing.

Also spotted in the crowd were Marine Corps Gen. Peter Pace (Ret.) and D.C. Councilmember Jack Evans.

Tickets to festival shows, including one by jazz great Roberta Flack, are still available at www.dcjazzfest.org
