The 86th annual lighting of the National Christmas tree

E-mail

President Obama delivers a Christmas message while the First Family along with Vice President look on.

Washington families rang in the holiday season Thursday evening with the 86th annual lighting of the National Christmas tree. The entire first family came out for the event, as well as Vice President Biden and his granddaughters.

American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, Grammy winner Sheryl Crow, singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne and rapper Common with the PS 22 Chorus were all on hand for the festive affair. The most energy efficient ever, the tree is a Colorado Blue Spruce, said Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar.

"We are reminded of the blessings we share and the joy of friends and family this holiday season," said President Obama in his Christmas message.
